At a gathering, Erki Kaikkonen told a story where the Romans asked the Greek Zeno what a person cannot learn…

“In the Roman state there was once a Greek Zeno, the most famous philosopher and the best teacher, to whom everyone sent their sons to study. The Roman consul got fed up, he summoned Zeno before the Senate and asked: “Tell me what a person is capable of learning, what he cannot?”

Zeno replied: “The first thing a person cannot learn is tact. One person is tactful, a thousand are not. When a tactless person begins to imitate a tactful person, a phenomenon called politeness arises. The second thing a person cannot learn is taste. One has it, ten thousand do not. The wiser ones choose an example for themselves and fashion arises. Don’t follow the wrong path, you may become ridiculous. The third thing you cannot learn is bravery and courage. One is brave, a hundred thousand are timid. The average person is so cowardly that he is embarrassed by it. This is where the phenomenon called audacity arises.”
After applauding Zeno, the consul dared to say: “Dear Greek, you have omitted to mention a very important thing that we Romans have long known – a sense of humor cannot be learned either, it must also be innate.”
To this Zeno replied: “Honorable consul – we Greeks have been convinced for centuries that a sense of humor consists of three components: tact, taste and courage.”
